Nestled in the heart of Los Angeles’ vibrant Koreatown, Hanbat Sul Lung Tang is a cherished destination for lovers of authentic Korean cuisine, specializing in the soul-warming Sul Lung Tang—traditional ox bone soup. This modest yet inviting restaurant offers a genuine taste of Korean culinary heritage, making it a beloved spot for both locals and visitors craving comfort food that comforts body and spirit alike.
At the core of Hanbat Sul Lung Tang’s menu is the signature Seolleongtang—a beautifully milky, rich broth simmered slowly from ox bones to unlock deep, savory flavors that linger with each warm sip. Popular choices include the Seokum Tax (mixed meats), the tender Beef Brisket (Salgogi), and the Yanji Flank, each offered for a reasonable $14.50. For those wanting to indulge further, the hearty Suyuk (boiled beef pieces) selections provide a satisfying experience with generous portions.
The culinary experience here is delightfully interactive. Diners take part in customizing their bowls by adding salt, pepper, and an abundance of chopped green onions—each adjustment coaxing out new layers of flavor in the rich broth. The accompanying kimchi, a crisp, slightly acidic complement, rounds out the meal, offering a zesty punch that avid Korean food enthusiasts will appreciate.
Hanbat Sul Lung Tang’s ambiance channels the authentic feel of 90s Koreatown, evoking a nostalgic charm that locals fondly recall and visitors can admire. The cozy, quaint setting provides a welcoming atmosphere where the focus is squarely on the food and the warmth it brings. While the restaurant can fill up during peak times, evidenced by short waits, the friendly and attentive staff ensure guests feel right at home.
Parking—often a challenge in busy K Town—is made stress-free here thanks to a free, secured parking lot monitored by an attendant, allowing guests to fully relax and enjoy their meal.
Customers repeatedly praise this long-standing establishment for its comforting and authentic experience. One patron described the broth as “very rich in flavor,” appreciating how minimal seasoning is needed to enjoy its depth. Another celebrated its “soul-healing bone broth” that has kept them coming back over the years. The combination of fresh, hot food served with two sides of kimchi rounds off what feels like a perfectly curated experience.
Whether you’re seeking a nourishing bowl to warm you through or looking to indulge in a traditional Korean culinary ritual, Hanbat Sul Lung Tang stands as a sincere emblem of comfort and authenticity in Los Angeles.
What a lovely location. Got the beef brisket Sul Lung Tang. The broth is very rich in flavour - Not too much additional seasoning needed. Love adding the onions! The staff are incredibly friendly as well. Price is okay, a bit expensive - with that said, everything in LA is expensive. Portion sizes are good! The Kimchi leans more on the acidic side. I was very close to giving this spot a 5 star, but there is a slight ~1-5% gaminess to the meat - Subjective but for those who can notice these finer details, it matters. Nit Picky but this place is one of the best I have had, and to really paint it onto the maps would require slightly higher quality meat suppliers. This would make a worlds difference. Highly highly recommended spot. The vibe is great!
I wouldn't change anything about this restaurant, not one thing! This restaurant has the 90s K Town look down to a T, and having been born in the area it was especially comforting! Only one thing to order, you choose the meats! Affordable and delicious local K Town cuisine! This place is perfect just the way it is
Went around lunch time on a Friday, and it was a bit hard to find parking. Restaurant itself was a bit crowded — we waited around 10 minutes for a table. They pretty much only have one option on the menu — the ox bone soup, but you can customize the flavor by adding salt, pepper, and toppings such as green onion. The broth was rich, hearty, and filling, and the kimchi (included with entrees) was well-made. Prices were a bit on the higher side.
1) FREE PARKING LOT! with a security attendant monitoring lot 2) delicious, authentic sul lung tang 3) cute, quaint restaurant with wifi 4) was a short wait when i went (saturday around 7pm) 5) food is fresh, hot, and comes with two sides of kimchi COME HERE! the food is super fresh and very authentic. perfectly salted (as you season it yourself), nourishing, and warm. there is a parking lot which is a HUGE plus in ktown. After you're done eating, you can stay parked there and walk around a little bit. Food is a bit pricey (with tip it was around $25), but it was very filling and delicious. Would definitely come back here again. overall, 5/5 stars!
A little hole in the wall spot that’s been here for many years. When I live in LA I came here a lot. I find myself missing their simple yet soul healing bone broth. Sul lung tang is what they do and you only come here for this dish. I like the tongue or brisket. The two Kimchee they got are solid. Tutorial on how to stretch into a three course meal: 1. Try the soup as is, add nothing to it and appreciate the magic of simple food done right. 2. Level 2, after finishing 1/4 of the bowl, add tons of scallions and very little salt. Flavor changed instantly and this is the time I would eat all my glass noodles in the bowl but try to save 1/3 of the broth with some meat 3. Grand finale! Pour the rice Kimchee sauce into the soup, ask for extra noodle (pro tip! They are ok with giving you that for free) and this is time for you to ask for refill of Kimchee if you want more. Scoop some rice in your soup and bang! Another completely different dish! With high turnover in the hospitality industry, their team remains exactly the same…. How can they not age a bit? Maybe the secret is in the soup lol. Just go try it yourself
Delicious sul lung tang (ox bone soup)! It's basically the only thing on the menu. You do get to choose which meats to include. I chose the mixed meat but be warned: mixed includes tripe and spleen. If you're okay with that, it's delicious! On a random Wednesday morning at 830am, it was empty other than a few regulars. The server was super sweet and helped me craft my bowl. Highly highly recommend for some Korean comfort food!
Incredible. I wouldn't change a thing. Everything was perfection. Bulgogi and in house kimchi was delicious. I'm already craving it again. Portion size was perfect. 25 dollars with tip, a but pricey but so good. Treat yourself when you can. It's like a warm hug to your soul. And the vibes inside are so nice. Healing experience. So simple and so effective.
I am by no means a seolleongtang connoisseur but Hanbat is well-known for a reason! They have a very small menu but they are very good at what they serve. I opted for the brisket in the soup. The beef bone broth is very beefy and the brisket is very tender. The meat to soup ratio is higher than what I expected, probably also because it sinks to the bottom of the bowl. Their rice was perfectly chewy and fluffy, and kimchi was refreshing. Keep in mind that to-go containers are an extra $0.50 so bring your own if you anticipate you will have leftovers! The portion is not huge though.
